After breakfast, you will leave Arusha and begin your drive across the dramatic Great Rift Valley. The route takes you past Maasai villages and striking volcanic landscapes before descending towards Lake Natron. On arrival, you will settle into your camp or lodge and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, take a guided walk along the shores of Lake Natron where flamingos and other birdlife thrive, then continue on foot to the Ngare Sero waterfalls, a refreshing oasis in the otherwise dry terrain. Return to your lodge for dinner and rest early in preparation for the climb.

Lake Natron Camp

Lake Natron Camp is a unique, ecological camp, suited to true adventurers who seek out the world’s last great natural environments. It offers some of East Africa’s best hikes, as well as the chance to see millions of Lesser Flamingo on Lake Natron. You will also experience the only active carbonatite volcano in the world and walk amongst hominid footprints left in the mud between 5,000 and 19,000 years ago.

At around 11:00 PM, you will wake and transfer to the base of Mount Oldoinyo Lengai to begin your midnight ascent. The climb is steep and challenging, taking between five and seven hours to reach the summit. By dawn, you will stand at 2,878 meters, rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise over Lake Natron, the Rift Valley escarpment, and even Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day. You will have time to explore the crater of this active volcano, which is the only one in the world that produces carbonatite lava. After taking in the views, descend back down to the base in three to four hours and return to your lodge for a well-earned rest. Later in the afternoon, you may choose to relax at camp or visit a nearby Maasai boma to learn about local culture.

After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed morning with the option of a short sunrise walk by Lake Natron. You will then begin the journey back to Arusha, arriving in time for lunch. In the afternoon, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight, marking the end of your unforgettable Oldoinyo Lengai adventure
